Educational Background:
1976 NCSU BA visual design
2006 SCAD MA graphic design
Educational Experience:
I began teaching part-time at CPCC in 2002 and became full-time just in time for the Fall 06 semester. I've also taught in the Queens College continuing ed program, and appeared at numerous elementary schools and public libraries across this great land of ours.
Helping build the best 2-year design program on the planet, where students have an opportunity to learn to be courageous creative thinkers, insightful visual communicators and perpetually curious people.
Other Information:
Born at an early age, I spent my formative years in Asheville, NC. In the shadow of the Blue Ridge Mountains I experienced a rich educational environment and so was able to graduate from high school in only four years.

Growing up surrounded by craftsmen, storytellers and folk artists profoundly influenced my creative growth. In only my second year of formal education, one of my illustrations took 1st place in the prestigious Biltmore Elementary School PTA Invitational. That inspired drawing, entitled “Yellow Ducky,” is now part of the permanent collection of my mother. Other original artwork, remnants of moderately unsuccesful career as a children's book creator, can be found in the collections of Keene State College and the Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County.

I am a 1976 graduate of the School of Design, NCSU, where I earned my Bachelor of Environmental Design/Product Design/Visual Design Option, or, BVD. In the spring of 2005, I received my Masters in Graphic Design from SCAD.

During my 30 + years as a graphic designer, I have done time in some of the more important creative groups in this city, including 18 years at Duke Energy, where I eventually worked my way up to the much-envied role of International Logo Cop. From there I transitioned to the chair of CPCC's Advertising + Graphic Design program. Working with a passionate faculty and inspired students, we are building the best design education experience on the planet.

Meanwhile, I am living happily-ever-after, with my lovely wife, and high school sweetheart, Joanne. Our one and only son, John, an above average lad, recently graduated from Wake Forest, got a job and moved out of the house.
